Siren Cycle
for voice and piano (13 minutes)
About
Music by Monica Chew, text by Megan Cohen, commissioned by soprano and producer Cristina Gallo. These pieces were premiered in Fort Point Lyric Center in Boston by soprano Cristina Gallo, mezzo-soprano Jacqueline Kerns, and pianist AnnaLotte Smith as part of the Siren Songs on September 14, 2024.
Siren Cycle is a set of three contrasting songs lasting 13 minutes, though each song stands alone. The first one, Hot Plastic Love, is a sexy bop, an ironic paean to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch floating in the ocean that's twice the size of Texas - and, like our love, lasting forever. The second, Water (Take Me Home to Me) is a song of yearning, a retelling of the classic Odyssean siren tale with acknowledgment that we are all made of water. The third, Public Service Announcement is an urgent call to come together and save our planet, and ourselves.
